The reports contained in these Official Records are those of the principal leaders who fought the battles and then documented their accounts. The Official Records are genuine eyewitness accounts by the veterans themselves and are widely considered the most comprehensive, authoritative source of reference material available on US Civil War operations today. The entire 128 volume archive comprises of four series and the details are outlined below.


Series 1:

This series focuses on military operations and includes the battle reports for both Union and Confederate armies, arranged in chronological order by campaign and theater of operations. Union reports are followed by Confederate accounts. The primary goal is to provide a complete history of the event in the same volume.


Series 2:

Comprises of 8 volumes which include Union and Confederate correspondence, orders, reports and returns relating to Prisoners of War alongside political prisoners.


Series 3:

This series comprises of 5 volumes and includes miscellaneous Union correspondence, orders and reports related to the organisation and logistics of the Union war effort. The series also includes calls for troops, communications between National and State authorities as well as communications between Union and Confederate authorities.


Series 4:

Comprises of 3 volumes and includes miscellaneous Union correspondence, orders and reports related to the Confederacy. Also included in this series are the General and Special orders of the Confederate States Army alongside communications related to conscriptions and blockage running. Finally a general index published in 1901 provides additions and corrections to prior volumes.
